Genre his the type of literature that is characterized by the form, content or style of the writing.
Prior to coming to this class, I was already pretty familiar with genre due to my last English class which had a huge emphasis on considering genre in a piece of writing. Consequently, since many of the assignments for this class required an analysis of genre, I was able to identify what the genre was and construct what I had to write around it.
Genre has a huge affect on how writing would be structured. For example the author would know how to style his/her language in correspondence to the genre of the writing. Specifically, for the lab report assignment, since it was mainly scientific, the language has to be at a certain degree which would be appropriate for the topic and would suit the vocabulary of the audience.
The way writing is structured is also dependent on the genre. For a lot of the assignments, we had to consider the genre and use it to see how we would structure our writing. This would mainly be evident in the table of contents where we would lay out what is going to be discussed.

The image above is from one of the genre analysis we had to do for class. These genre analysis would involve looking at sample projects before doing our own to get an idea of what is expected of us and how we should make our assignment. These genre analysis made us answer questions regarding the samples that would allow us to look deeper at what was required, which made these assignments helpful in the long run.
Even though I was already familiar with genre before coming to this class, everything I have learned recently has allowed me to appreciate what genre can do for writing and literature. As a class, we went deeper into the concept of genre especially with the genre analysis before each assignment, which allowed us to gain a deeper understanding of how it plays a part in our writing.
